In connection with the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, two test procedures must be distinguished. While a PCR test can detect infection with SARS-CoV-2, an antibody analysis is used to detect antibodies in the blood.
Antibody tests thus show whether a patient was already ill with COVID-19 and whether his body has produced specific antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 during the course of the infection.
As long as these antibodies can be detected in the blood of the test person, the latter is immune to a renewed infection with the virus.
In order to fight the infection with SARS-CoV-2, the immune system produces antibodies that can recognize the virus and render it harmless. These antibodies often remain in the blood for several years and thus ensure immunity.
Their formation begins about two to eight days after the first symptoms appear. From this time on, the antibodies can be detected in the blood.
An antibody test is, therefore, only meaningful relatively late. On the other hand, it offers the possibility to measure whether a patient is immune to a new infection with SARS-CoV-2 after surviving the disease.
The antibody analysis for SARS-CoV-2 is carried out in our multiple certified gene laboratory. To perform the test, we only need a few drops of the patient’s blood. These can be taken by a simple fingertip prick.
We will send the necessary sample set together with instructions for the collection by mail. After the sample has safely arrived at our laboratory in the enclosed transport packaging, we carry out the antibody test.
We then send the test results by e-mail, protected by a login.
